Blueberries are the second most popular berry consumed after strawberries. Blueberries are low on the glycemic index and so have a low impact on blood sugar. They are high in anti-oxidants. Anthocyanin provides the blueberry color and anti-oxidant protection. Animal studies found blueberry consumption lowered cholesterol. Studies involving drinking blueberry juice showed that memory may be improved. In yet another study, eating blueberries improved depression. Freezing blueberries does not alter blueberries health benefits.
The upside is that there is no downside to eating blueberries. Here in Vermont, it is blueberry picking season…so get out there and pick a few quarts!
